Selected Case Studies
Every search is different, but the hardest mandates often share the same challenge: finding people with the right combination of technical depth, hands-on experience and ability to operate in a scaling environment.
These case studies highlight some of our recent work across the critical minerals and materials supply chain — the challenge, how we approached the market, and the experience that ultimately mattered.
Building the operations team for a US DLE company
Direct Lithium Extraction | US | Scale-Up
The challenge: A Texas lithium company moving produced-water DLE toward commercial operation needed two engineers capable of working across extraction, plant operations, and downstream lithium conversion.

The difficulty wasn't finding chemical engineers. It was finding people with relevant experience who could operate effectively in a small scale-up team, troubleshoot problems directly, and bridge the gap between process development and production.
Our approach: We mapped talent across lithium, chlor-alkali, chemicals and adjacent process industries, focusing on engineers with hands-on experience across process scale-up, commissioning, operations and troubleshooting.
The outcome: To date, Volta Search has placed four engineers into the team, alongside the company's first Chief of Staff.

Client feedback: "Stuart has been fantastic to work with—professional, organized, and incredibly effective. He asked thoughtful questions early on to really understand what we needed, and quickly delivered a strong slate of candidates that were not only highly qualified but also a great fit for our team. His process was efficient, and his attention to detail in candidate selection made a big difference. I'd highly recommend Stuart to anyone looking for a sharp, reliable recruiter who gets results." Executive Leadership for a Scaling Rare Earths Company
Rare Earths | UK | Executive Search | COO
The challenge: A UK rare earths company developing an integrated mine-to-magnet supply chain needed a COO capable of helping move the business from technology and project development toward commercial operation.
The requirement went beyond traditional operational leadership. The right individual needed experience developing and scaling complex critical minerals projects, while combining technical understanding, project execution, commercial leadership and the ability to operate effectively within a growing business.

Our approach: We mapped senior leadership across rare earths, lithium, battery materials, mining and advanced processing, focusing on executives who had genuinely built and developed projects rather than simply managed established operations.
Particular emphasis was placed on experience navigating the transition from project development through financing, engineering, construction and ultimately commercial operation.

The outcome: Volta Search appointed a COO with previous CEO-level experience developing one of the UK's major lithium refining projects, bringing a combination of critical minerals experience, project development and commercial leadership directly relevant to the company's next stage of growth.

Candidate feedback: "I worked with Stuart over the period of a year to get the job I wanted. He has been professional, consistent and communicative throughout. It was a long haul, but I really enjoyed working with him. I never had any doubt we would get there and, because of that, I would happily work with him again. Thanks for everything Stuart!" Engineering Team for a Novel Critical Minerals Separation Technology
Critical Mineral Separation | US | Technical Leadership | Scale-Up
The challenge: A venture-backed critical minerals company developing novel separation technology needed a Head of Engineering and Senior Engineer to help move the process from laboratory development toward pilot and commercial scale.
The challenge was finding people who could do more than design a process or operate an established plant. In a small technical team, the hires needed to work across process design, equipment selection, build, commissioning and day-to-day troubleshooting as the technology scaled.

Our approach: We mapped talent across hydrometallurgy, solvent extraction, lithium, specialty chemicals and adjacent process industries, focusing on engineers who had genuinely taken new processes from design through construction and into operation.
Particular emphasis was placed on hands-on scale-up experience — people comfortable moving between engineering calculations and process development, equipment and vendors, commissioning, operations and solving the problems that emerge once a process is running.

The outcome: Volta Search supported the build-out of the engineering function with senior technical talent combining process development, industrial scale-up and hands-on operating experience, giving the company the capability to take its separation technology into the next stage of development.

Client feedback: "Stuart is a highly professional and seasoned talent resource in the critical minerals space. He has deep understanding of the space in general but also an uncanny ability to translate technical requirements into practical profiles and then match them to candidates. I have also found his approach to be one of collaboration and partnership and it’s been a pleasure working with him. I highly recommend him for any projects / mandates in the space and especially for startups (but I am sure he is equally effective for larger / later stage clients)" Kunal Sinha, CEO
